My Mom dumped Ortho Bug-Geta Plus on my garden

Nearly typing through tears here. My mom, (whose not all there) dumped copious amounts of bug and snail killer all on my vegetables. Romain, peppers, broccoli, strawberries etc. Like tons.. While there's law in CA saying you can't use this stuff on broccoli and strawberries, I chatted with an Ortho rep and they said everything would be ok to eat with a good cleaning.

My neighbors are waiting for me to give them stuff but I don't want to kill any of them or be responsible for birth defects.

Please help!

So sorry that happened! Not sure what kind of advice you're seeking? Also not sure I'd trust these folks regarding what's safe or not. Is that what you're getting at?

You've probably already thought about a new place to "hide" your gardening chemicals. Maybe you could put something benign in an empty package so she can "kill bugs" to her hearts' delight? Would a sign help to remind her? Sounds like she's a gardener to her core, sending you both a big hug!

It sounds like the company already told you the facts. So you need to choose:
    1 Go with their suggestions
2 check with poison control (1-800-222-1222)
    3 or toss everything.

    Wanted to add --
Avoid future issues by, from this point froward, managing your garden chemicals as if you had young children w/sticky fingers -- lock all garden chemicals in a shed/container.

I would recommend checking with poison control like jean001a suggested. They are professionals who can give you quality advice that you can use as a legal cover if something goes terribly wrong. If poison control says it's okay to serve the food after a good cleaning then the liability of causing any health problems would fall onto them. Hope this helps.

Thanks all. I did call poison control, then the agr commissioner. Basically not much help, just said to call manufacturer and that they only had info on eating the stuff - not the plants soaking it up. They did say it'll probably be ok to just clean the food good before eating.

I sure as heck hope there aren't any animals around! This stuff is very high on the list of most toxic for pets.

I sure hope that you'll heed the advice about putting your chemicals under lock and key. We should all do that.

I left my bag of bug geta on the front porch in a corner and this morning the bag had been ripped open and there was a lot of it loose on the porch. Not sure what animal would do that during the night??!! Any comments?

what they all said ... good work on using the phone ... etc ...

but i dont know if your comment about them 'soaking it up' is realistic .... would welcome a discussion on such ...

regardless.. i suspect you are never going to get over this .. lol .. so may as well chuck it all in.. just for piece of mind ...

its not the first time a farmer lost a crop ... ken

ps: sos must have GIANT slugs .. lol ... there must be an attractant in such.. so something was attracted ... wouldnt surprise me if it isnt some beer byproduct ... maybe used yeast??? .. who knows ...

Ken, the OP posted this problem three years ago.

soswald, what comments are you looking for? Don't keep your chemicals where animals of any kind can get to it! That was an irresponsible and dangerous choice.

Read the warnings on the label.
