Cucumbers in pie tins?

After telling her about the aphids and spider mites that have somehow infested my INDOOR stevia plant, my sister sent me a screenshot of a list of cucumber based "solutions". One of those solutions listed was to put a slice of cucumber into a metal pie tin because the chemical reaction would repel common garden pests.
How true is this? Can I chalk this up to viral facebook misinformation?
