Without some pictures, I'd guess you are seeing some harmless slime mold. Google to compare and post pictures if that's not what it is.

I hope that you'll Google some information about slime molds. It's not a mold nor a fungus and not anything that you need to 'get rid of'. It's harmless.

If its appearance bothers you, try taking a shovel and turning it over or even burying it.

Just out of curiosity, have you applied some new mulch to this area?

then look at the beatifully named FUNGUS at the link ...

as to any fungus ... its doing its job decomposing whatever is there.. usually wood/mulch .. ignore it.. consider it a free garden bonus provided by ma nature ...

i am not up on whether slimes need be addresses .. rather than ignored ...

to be very clear.. unless you see some impact on some plant.. nothing really need be slaughtered simply for no reason .. most of the fungus are rather interesting and amazing ... once you understand.. all you need do.. is enjoy the show ... most fungii.. have a very short life ...

Just to clarify....Ken, the link you posted are of one particular kind of "slime mold ".....which aren't a kind of mold or fungus. They aren't even in the same Kingdom. Yes, the ever popular Dog Vomit fungus is a slime mold.

This particular organism will move across (they travel) any surface in search of food, including man made stuff. Their food is microscopic dust like particles.....they don't infect anything or grow hyphae in order to decompose.

I think that it's a worthy differentiation and makes these protists (not fungi) even more interesting than they already are.
