Next time, you need to step back and take a picture from a little distance. A macro image isn't helpful here.

Those are the drill holes of a type of woodpecker called a sapsucker. They make the holes in a living tree in order to feed on the sap that collects in the holes and more importantly, the small insects that are attracted to that sap.

Extensive drilling by a sapsucker can be harmful to any tree or large woody shrub.

in my very limited experience here in MI ... there arent a lot of them around ...

they seemed only to attack already stressed trees ... its like they knew they were on my chainsaw list ...

i dont know if that is a coincidence ... or how they do it ...
