That looks exactly like one of the Soldier Beetle species....the Pennsylvania Leatherwing, to be precise. They are quite closely related to lightning bugs, and like their cousins are considered beneficial.

Whatever is 'eating ' your plants is still unidentified. These beetles (adults and larvae) are busy predators, carnivores and not plant nibblers.
