How much at one time are you trying to wash?
We put the leaves from the lettuces under the faucet, or maybe in the sink full of water, more because of sand then slug slime, and that works quite well. Slug slime washes off quite easily.

I am washing around 8-10 heads at a time. I first let it soak in a tub of cold water so the slugs will rise to the surface, then I rinse under the faucet and try to eye the rest. I just know that I have had to scrub my hands with a brush in order to get the slime off, maybe I have different kind of slime but it's a "bugger" to get off. I'm not inspecting each leaf for slime, I'm just assuming it's there because of all the slugs and would feel better if I was washing them in something. Probably just a psychological thing, lol.

do you know how to deal with slugs using a 10% spray of either vinegar or ammonia ... [i suppose you will be anti ammonia, and that is fine with me]

prevention is usually easier than the solution ...

also ... heads of lettuce??? why not just peel off the first few leaves??? though i suspect.. you are talking about gobs of leaf lettuce.. rather than head lettuce????

Try putting a little bit of vinegar in the tubs of water, then through another soak with clean water. You could also use an organic dish soap in your first washing. You can even find dish detergents that are (USDA) Certified Organic, if that certification is necessary to you (if you sell your produce as Certified Organic).

I agree with you that slug slime doesn't want to rinse off so easily with plain water. I'll use a splash of vinegar or rub a slice of lemon on my hands.

Use DRY Boraxo powdered hand soap. Put it on, rub it off, until you think you've gotten rid of the slime, then wash your hands with it.
