Mottled Bean Leaves - disease or defficiency?

Posted by kenzo 6 (My Page) on

One of my bean plants (Italian white beans) has developed mottled leaves - I have a hard time distinguishing all the plant diseases when I look at pics - it looks like it could be bean mosaic virus but it does not look as drastic as any pictures on the web - maybe its early?

or could it be a deficiency in the soil or a bug - I did not see anything on the underside of the plant?

I don't want to yank the plants out if they are savable but if its mosaic I will do so quickly before it spreads any more

thanks in advance

any sucking bugs on the reverse of the leaf ???

RE: Mottled Bean Leaves - disease or defficiency?

It sure looks like a mosaic virus, to me. Does the leaf feel a little bit leathery, different from the others?

Have you observed any aphids on the beans?

I don't want to definitively tell you that this is one of the bean mosaic virus diseases from just one distant picture......but I would sure be suspicious from that type of mottling.

RE: Mottled Bean Leaves - disease or defficiency?

I don't see any bugs I don't recall the leaf feeling strange - here are some closer up pics

I will yank them when I get home to be safe - should I remove only plants with visible mottling or assume the whole area is infected?

and the front

and a pic of the front

Ditto on the virus diagnosis. Remove the affected plant.
