Creeping black blight on sunchokes

barbara40

I've grown jeruselem artichokes happily for years with no attention and increasing yields (I barter them for cool stuff), but last fall as the plants got ready to bloom a section of my best-producing raised bed began to turn black, from the ground up, one plant after another. Later when I went to dig the survivors I found nothing left of the tubers, and tried to clean out the whole bed to plant something else. But this year the uncontaminated section is jammed with sprouting plants that must have worked their way too deep to dig (more than 2 feet).

NOBODY but me seems to report any trouble like this with sunchokes, and I would love some help figuring out what it is and what to do about it before the creeping black blight strikes again. THANKS!
