Troubled Dogwood

I just noticed this yesterday: lichens (or what look like it) on the tree trunk and a strange, furry parasite growing on several of the branches of my dogwood. Don't know if the two are related, or if they are just friends... In any case, this is alarming to me.

I have searched all sorts of places on the web, and find nothing that looks like this. Does anyone here have any idea of what this is, how harmful it is, and how to get rid of it? I would really appreciate your help.

They are simply different stages of the same lichen. Removal of lichen is not recommended as it is considered harmless. You might even damage the protective bark by attempting removal.
