Melon field pest protection

I'm putting watermelon, pumpkin, and cantaloupe plants in this weekend. They'll be going in their own sunny part of the yard, and I'm curious as to whether anyone has advice for fencing needs. I live in a rural area, and lots of deer, rabbits, raccoons, woodchucks, squirrels, and chipmunks regularly frequent my yard. My regular garden is like fort knox... raised beds with fencing on all sides including underneath and on top... no pest problems there. I don't get the idea that I'll need quite that level of diligence for the melon field... I'm thinking just a short fence buried some distance at its base. Would 2 feet in height be good enough? Do deer bother anyone elses melon plants? What height/material keeps melon loving critters out? Any advice from melon growers would be most appreciated.
