What are these ants doing to my dahlia??

I THINK this is a dahlia. I'm not 100% sure.

But in any case, what are they doing and how can I stop them!??!

Gathering honeydew from aphids. Spay it down with water and see if they return.

I see a lacebug in the second picture. They pierce the plant to get the sap, and the ants take advantage of this.

They may be gathering exudate, they may be cleaning up some insects (ants are predators), or they may simply be exploring the plant for future reference. I see nothing the are "doing" to the Dahlia.
