Strange growth on chocolate mint plant...

Hello all,
Can anyone help me identify what this is on my chocolate mint plant. Photos provided.
They are like little caps stuck to the stem. I popped one off and it had a reddish like paste coming out of the bottom.
I just got this plant from a friend, first time I've seen it. I do not have much gardening experience, just started. Any help is appreciated, thank you.
