what disease or pest is this?

I have a Murraya koenigii plant and I see that its stem and leaves are covered with brown flaky spots. The seems some kind of a fungus growing on top of the leaves and the stem but I am not sure. It falls off if I try to scratch it.

Can someone please identify this and tell me how to fix this?

Yikes! That's a terrible scale insect infestation. The insects have been there for quite some time, that kind of infestation doesn't happen overnight.

This is one of those times where I would have to ask you how attached you are to this one plant. If it were mine, I'd get rid of the whole thing!

RE: what disease or pest is this?

yeah, I know its pretty bad. I was away for a while and didn't see it coming. The plant is kind of rare and I don't want to get rid of it.

RE: what disease or pest is this?

Is this a container grown plant? Is it inside or outside? Do you use it for culinary purposes?

(I see questions about this plant very frequently so I'm thinking that it's not all that rare in case you should have to replace it.)

RE: what disease or pest is this?

It is outside. No, I don't use it for culinary purpose. I will check the nursery if they got this.
After reading about scale infestation a bit on the net it seems there is no solution!

But there is no guarantee that the new plant will not get it. So there has to be some way to kill this pest, no?

RE: what disease or pest is this?

A scale infestation can be brought under control if caught early. Horticultural oils are very effective against scale, when applied properly. Hort. oils are the most recommended solution for these pests, by far. This is not the ideal time of year, however, as they shouldn't be applied in hot weather.

Is this a containerized plant?

RE: what disease or pest is this?

Thank you, Rhizo. No, it is not in a container. I showed it to some guy from nursery and he said it is mealybug and suggested Lambda Cyhalothrin

RE: what disease or pest is this?

Your nursery guy is one hundred percent wrong....and I'm one hundred percent positive that you have a major scale infestation. (And I'm right!)

I'd never recommend a pyrethroid to control scale insects.....hope you didn't buy any.

RE: what disease or pest is this?

it's not a mealybug - that I know for sure.
