That sounds like a rat.

Your description sounds just like the pesky voles that sneak into my garden areas after the veggies. Mine had a penchant for zucchini and cucumbers, the little devils.

I think rhizo has it from the tail description. Nasty and will eat just about any kind of plant and even cause shrub damage. I've never seen any on my property as large as a chipmunk (thank God) but they can be.

I was thinking voles too.
The ones I saw were closer to grey squirrel sized.
Any ideas for control?
The resident snakes aren't making a dent but I do bid them welcome. I have been collecting shed snake skins. Could shoving a skin down in the tunnels put the fear in these critters? Or would it just be a protein source to balance their veg intake?
These are definitely not rats.

To catch voles, set a snaptrap (mousetrap) baited with an apple or sunflower kernels. Put it near the hole. Cover it with a large container like a 2 gallon nursery pot or a bucket. Put a rock on top of pot so it doesn't blow over.

thanks for the info. I agree snap traps look like the way to go. I found some with plastic bases instead of wood. So, they should hold up in case of rain. I've read baiting with peanut butter works.
