Thumbs up, because it's a PARASITIZED (dead) aphid, called appropriately enough...an aphid 'mummy'.

Do you see those two little appendages on their posterior...thy look like two tail pipes? Those are one of the physical features that will tell you one hundred percent of the time that the insect you are looking at is an aphid.

Aphid mummies are bloated and much easier to notice than their thirsty and living sisters. Be on the lookout for the 'thumbs down' members of the group, lol.

I see the tail pipes LOL. I was wondering why it doesn't move. I began to assume it was dead after a day or so. Why did it puff up so much? I was removing old leaves that is when I found it.

Aphid mummies are so swollen because of the activity of the parasitoid within their bodies. Aphid parasites are very small wasps, about the size of the aphids. The adult female lays an egg just under the exoskeleton of the aphid. The egg hatches within the body and the small larvae feeds on the juicy innards of its host. The aphid body swells, I'm not sure why but perhaps due to gases produced by the dieing aphid or the feeding juvenile wasp.

When the wasp reaches maturity, it gnaws a tiny round hole in the exoskeleton of the aphids and flies away....leaving an empty aphid mummy.

On quick glance, I would have sworn it was a spider. I learn so much on this forum!!!

Here's a google page for 'aphid mummies'. I thought you'd like to see images of the mummies along with living aphids of all sizes. There are also some pictures of the exit holes AND you can also see the tiny little parasitic wasp that's responsible for the mummies. If you find lots of these mummies on your plants, you'll know that natural pest control is alive and well in your gardens.
