Removing rust infected trees, what to do next?

I have given up battling the cedar-quince rust on my hawthorns, which last year finally infected my quince shrub as well (I am in mourning, I love quince and it was loaded with fruit). So I have cut them all down. I have no idea where the fungus overwinters, I haven't spotted it on the arborvitae. Some red cedar nearby, I suppose. It is a prolific native in the area.

Anyway, I am concerned about reusing the area for other trees/shrubs. Ideally, I would put a few dwarf fruit trees, but I wonder about them (especially apples) picking up the rust. I guess I should just never plant quince again.

Is there anything else I can/should do to sanitize the area? There is a lot of mulch, does it need to be raked up and thrown away? I got the trees down before the spores were ripe I think. I have picked up all leaves/fruit that I could find from the trees.

Appreciate any advice, thanks!
