OP discovered that these are moth eggs. I suggested that if they keep the porch light on at night, that a yellow bulb be used in place of a white one.

Have discovered they are army worm eggs! The golf course superintendent where we live identified them. He said they will treat the course for them in the fall. We will treat our lawn then too.

did he tell you how to remove that stuff on the ceiling.. or does it just wash off????

The golf course supt said they wash them off with a power washer. I won't be able to do that because of the ceiling fan we have on the porch. DD had similar egg sacs on her porch, but down low where we could easily observe and test various methods for removal. Straight vinegar sprayed on the mass, then wiped off with a paper towel and a bit of elbow grease seemed most effective.
