What is this mushy thing I found in the dirt outside?

I live in an urban area, with a somewhat shared lawn. I was digging in the top soil recently, where I had started a pile of pulled weeds, to dry them in the sun and use as a compost or mulch. I hit something white that I first thought was a plastic pipe. I dug it out, and then it looked like a fruit... But I didn't put it there. Possible my neighbor added it as compost?

Seems unlikely, but on closer inspection, it split in half and looks like nothing I've ever seen!

About the size of a tennis ball. The outer layer is white and seems rubbery. The inner layer is a gradient of purple to bronze, and is soft and gel-like if I poke it with a stick.

I was worried it was some kind of bug nest or rotting fruit that could attract pests - bc it was hardly below the top soil. EW.
