Thanks. We saw the bird but thought it was after what ever caused the damage. What on earth makes it always go the same height and create such an even almost perfect pattern and if you know, what is it after?

Vevelynb, sapsuckers are true to their name....they drill those shallow holes into the phloem layer, the tissue that carries the carb rich photosynthates from the leaves down throughout the plant. The sap dribbles out through those little holes and the sapsucker laps it up.

It will also munch on ants and other small insects that also visit for the sap.
