For a longer lasting deterrent, get a cat. Or two. Or three.

We have had cats and some did not even show any interest in chasing, much less catching, mice. Traps are much more effective depending on the bait used.

The old standby - peanut butter. Or bacon, or a strongly aromatic cheese. Traps are cheap, often sold in a 3 or 4 pack at the hardware store.

Do you have any ideas as to how/where mouse could get in? My BIL tried for a couple of years to figure out why they had intermittent evidence of mice, had resorted to keeping almost all food, dog food, in sealed containers - their pantry looked like an ad for Storables or Rubbermaid with nothing in the original packaging :)

In desperation, he pulled out the built in dishwasher and found a tiny gap in the floor where the plumbing was - packed it with steel wool with a screw driver and (knock on wood) - problem seems solved.
