OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hi! have a mamal of some type that ive never seen but i know its of good size as it breaks brances and makes alot of noise as it moves through the woods. Ok let me explain a little more in detail.... I live in Mass. i live in a small town and my home is located near a lake in the woods. I have lots of wild life that comes to mat yard. Last year we had a black bear! its not uncommon to see deer, rabit, turkeys, fox, and of course the unwanted squirrels and chipmunks. I also have heard the cries of what i think is a Coy dog in the distance and have found larger cat and dog prints that werent domesticated in the snow throughout last winter. I had also seen a Fisher Cat in my yard in the early spring and haven seen it since, thank God! Ok so now that i have this set up, i can explain my expiriences.
A few times last summer, during the day i heard some animals call that sounded like a skidding tire on pavement like a kid on a stunt bike( BMX. and it would thrash through the woods on flight. I never got a look of it. and again this year1 time during the day and several times at night. but this time as ive had closter encounters it sounds like a combo of the skid and a hiss. as I would hiss back, and it would do it back. back and fourth a few times. I could never get to a working flash light in time to see what it was. one night in peticulat, i steppen onto my porch where i put on the light but never lit up the area towards the woods. I could see two sets of eyes about 2 feet off the ground. I hissed and so did they and i heard a mock charge. Needless to say i went in my house and locked the door! I usually work 2nd shift and come home to the dark, i would like to know what im facing. Or shall i say what i could get eaten by,lol. LOL, the funny thing is that about 3 weeks ago i went and bought a 3000 candle power spotlight just to see this mysterious creature and since ive bought it have yet to see it in my yard! Darn it! My guess is that this may be a Fisher cat but im just guessing as i really dont know much about them. I tried to do a search for a sound file of what a fisher cat sounds like but have failed. I often have deer in my yard but i dont think deer make that soyund so im stumped. Can anyone tell me what this is? Missy

I have no idea - but your story scared the crap out of me, too!

 o
RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

ok, at first i thought it sounded like an owl until you said mock charge. could wing flaps sound like a mock charge? however, the flashlight should have revealed what was behind those eyes unless is was just too dark, concealed, and far enough away.

then again, i also have never seen or heard a fisher or been to your state.

sounds like my idea of heaven. can i visit? :)

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Yikes! I'm scarred too! What is a fisher cat? Is that a badger or a beaver or something?

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hi there Thank you for responding to my post Jersey girl, fairytoadmother and october17! Ok, i know its nothing that flies, that i know for sure! I have owls here on occasion and i know their call and the sounds they make when they fly. Yes it is quite scarry for me , my dad has yet to hear it so i am the only one whom has encountered this here at my house. Ok fot those of you that dont know about the fisher cat heres a link to give you an idea about what the fisher cat is.http://www.backyardchickens.com/LC-FisherCat.html the one that i have seen was atleast 20 lbs. and yes october 17 it is much like a badger. it is as nasty as one too! it actually is in the weasel family. Fishers are well known for hunting those adorable porcupines we have out here. I have some cats coming back in the neighborhood too so im guessing its not the fisher cat as they would get eaten too. soooo. i know that bears manke a chuffing sound and something like chewy from star wars, lol. but im curious as to what they sound like when they are taken by surprise or spooked. I have no idea what this thing is and probably wont rest until i find out. Its nice to live in the woods but geez some times im not sure if its safe to leave my house, lol. and ill admit for this young adult, yes im afraid of the dark! not the Boogie men but the wildlife, lol. Ok any other suggestions or comments greatly welcomed! Have a nice day! missy

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

I have had skunks do this. LOL. It happened to me one year when I went to the wilder parts of my property to pick blackberries and heard the "charge". It was actually a skunk assuming the position. I backed off immediately, it let 'er fly and the stench was exquisite. I was not in the direct path, however, and didn't have lasting memories. I was also once chased by a groundhog who tried to come through my screen door. Rural life, you gotta love it. No, I have no idea what you are encountering. Retreating is often a good solution. Good luck.

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hi there. This mystery may never be solved, but I would be careful wandering around your house late at night! Our animal control officer told us that any animal that eats meat (eg. fishers, weasels) is susceptible to rabies. I once encountered an oppossum that hissed at me and I ran. Guess they don't always play dead!

 o
RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Missy,
I haven't a guess at what's making those noises, but you may want to ask over in the wildlife forum. Someone over there might have encountered something similar. It's worth a shot anyway.

Badgers & Bears & Skunks...oh, my!

I once sent my hubby out to douse the neighbor's cat w/ a bucket of water while it was tearing up our garbage. He quickly came running back in the house shouting, "That's no cat, that's a skunk!" It reaked outside for days, but thankfully hubby didn't get sprayed! Skunk didn't come back either! LOL

el chucacabra??? bigfoot???

just kidding...I am not sure what you have, but keep us posted. You need to get yourself one of these small digital cameras with a motion sensor attached. Just position it out in the yard, then next time the critter comes around you can get a good photo of it.

stoked, laughing hysterically here on teh chucucabre!! i will be hysterical if they are sighted!

 o
RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Have you found out what it was?

The odd screeches and the hissing, and the hissing back in challenge, and the mock charge, and the height of eyes from ground; the timing of the various noises in day and night; the huge clumsy noise they make when crashing thru vegetation.... All sound like the big bold raccoons we have around here.

The size, and timing, and crashing noises could also be groundhog, but the noises don't fit. And groundhogs generally will not challenge unless you stumble close to them when they have no easy escape route. They would rather just give you a nasty look, and crash off into the underbrush.

 o
RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

I heard there's an epidemic of raccoon-borne rabies along the Eastern seaboard. I read this on a Rhode Island website.

Maybe you have a deranged raccoon there.

I read that skunks are raccoons, unlike opossums, are serious rabies vectors.

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hi,
Last night I was scared too by a strange noise coming out of the woods. I spent an hour on the web looking for audio s and found something that may help. Go to

http://www.wildlifetech.com/pages/home.htm

They have a huge list of animal sounds. They aren't available online but if you call the number provided for a sample you will get a very nice lady who will try and figure out the animal for you. She did this for me.

The closest thing we could find was a fisher cat as the sound was like a woman wailing and then a laughing noise. It scared me so bad I couldn't go outside to feed my horse last night. The night before when I fed my horse the dog was growling at something and the horse was standing with her ears pricked in the same direction towards the woods. I was so flipped I started imagining ghosts or something as I have just moved to this remote place next to a national forest with an old cemetary across the street.

It could be a coyote too as they have a very large array of noises and I know they are out there as I heard puppies yipping in the April/May.

I'm thinking of getting a motion triggered camera to catch whatever it is in the woods for something is tracking the deer. I suspect cougar but I don't know.

I'm also afraid for my two domestic kitties!

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hey everyone. I'm sure this post is probably dead and gone to everyone but I've just stumbled across it. The same sort of thing happened to us last night. It was so scary! Me and my fiance were watching a movie and I thought I heard my cat or some kind of noise outside. So as I muted the tv my fiance's ears perked up like a dogs and he heard it too, now much closer to the house. We immediately looked at eachother and started to worry about our cats. We ran into the kitchen and found both kitties in the house looking out the window into the woods (we have 3 acres in maine). My honey ran outside on to the porch for a better look out there. It really sounded like a monkey screeching or something crying for its dear life. I have heard fisher cats before and they sound more like what a cat would sound like if it was being eaten alive (sorry guys). This was something different. So, it was about 25 degrees outside last night but my fiance ran into the backyard to our bedroom window with a flash light and no shoes, told me to open the window, he tore a huge hole into the screen and told me to get his revolver and the bullets, as he loaded the gun you could hear it screaming away and rustling around right behind one of our sheds and just in the woods. Even though he was shining a bright light over there it didn't even budge. Usually as soon as you step about 50 feet away from an animal it sees, hears or senses you and runs away. This kept screaming. He moved closer and closer to it, probably got about 30 feet from it but since it was behind the shed he never got a look at it. eventually it just stopped. It was soooo creepy and I hope it never comes back! I can't find any good sounds online either, that's how I found this forum. But I just wanted to share our scary story. Oh boy, these woods are fun... I miss the desert :( I thought the coyotes in arizona were scary but at least you know what you're hearing out there.

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

I live up here in the White Mountains of NH and have all of the animals you mentioned plus the moose, coyotes, and such. The one that scares me the most is the Fisher Cat, very scary eery screams from them and they are vicious to boot. I have had a young bear hiss at me (see picture below). He also mock charged me as he was doing the hissing. I hissed louder and he ran off a short distance. Maybe there are a couple young bears vying for territory or something. I have an unatural fear of the bears, but have almost gotten over it. Heh, heh, kinda.
How about moose? They make a whistling, skidding type sound, more like one of those long corrigated hollow tubes that we had as kids that you twirl around in the air over your head. That would also explain the thrashing sound.
Bobcat fights? Just a guess. I hope you find out what it is, knowledge is power!

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hi...

I was searching around the web for fisher cat sounds and wandered across this post. Back in 1985-87 (I was in high school) I lived in Sunapee, NH and we had an animal that lived in the woods out in back of the house (there were trails, lots of woods, and a swamp) that used to scare me to death with its shrill human-like cries. One night I heard it over the television and just turned out all the lights and listened to it for a while. Sent shivers up and down my spine. I don't remember exactly what it sounded like all these years later, but I remember it sounded kind of human, and it scared the daylights out of me.

That "hissing and crashing" sound like you described sounds EXACTLY like something my brother and I heard around the same time one night... I'm wondering if it was the same animal that made the cries?

We were going out on our porch just after dusk and heard what sounded like something BIG falling out of a tree, then CRASHING through the brush at breakneck speed away from us, making a noise that sounded like a person trying to yell through clenched teeth.

It sounded like something big, like it was just crashing through tree branches and brush...

Scariest thing I ever heard. Was pretty scared to go into the woods after that. :)

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hi I was looking up fisher cats, and found this. I have a family vacation house On Lake winnipesaukee, NH. It's been in my family since 1966. Before I was born. Lots of wildlife that has now been gone for atleast 15 yrs, because of the people building. I have seen for the first time this year, dead deer in the lake, and saw an owl everyday of the week I was their. It also swooped in the lake and grabbed a fish and took off. Beautiful, the owls were calling eachother. Then, Thursday night I heard (w/5 other people) weird, loud nasty noises and serious fighting going on, I was like, what is that?? Nobody ever heard that before, and we live in the woods hear in NH. My friends and husband are hunters, and they guessed, but I didn't believe it,(fisher) cause never has anything like that been seen or heard or mentioned in 40+ yrs. Well, my friend and I went on to the carport where the trash was, and WOW, thought it was a very cute cuddily puppy, like bear looking thing. I knew it had to be the weasel family cause of the long and shape, but big, and fluffy. I went and got my camera, and the fisher cat ran around the garbage barrell, and thought it was running away, charged us, we were about 3 feet from it and jumped in the house. couldn't get the pic. But earlier we heard something under the porch. and sounded big, must of been that. I looked on the net, and saw the picture of a fisher and I can't believe it. Tric

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hi, just found this site. Last night my husband and I heard the most awful sound from our woods. We live in VT and have 55 acres. It sounded like a monkey in trouble. VERY LOUD. I know we don't have monkies here so anyone have any ideas of what it was. I tried looking for fisher cat noises. That's how I found this site. We heard coyotes barking and growling at the same time. It really scared me.

 o
RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

I know this is an old post, but after reading the whole thing, I need to make an obvious suggestion --
MOVE TO THE FRIGGIN' CITY!!! Yeesh! We simply don't go roaming around at night, and the scariest animals on four feet, or more (obiviously humans are the most dangerous) are rats. They don't like us, anymore then we like them, so no hunting required (outside). Still -- beats the heck out of running into fisher cats, skunks, (eh, nevermind, some of the ferrel cats don't smell any better then skunks), bear, or even the vicious, and frightening voles!

Well, gotta go take a shower now -- got the heebeegeebees, and got to wash off all those loud, clumsy, sounds and feelings crawling up and down my skin. (NOW I remember why I moved into the city! LOL)

 o
RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Well. This all sounds like the beginning of a Stephen King novel...and his always take place in NE too!! Fisher cats. Hmmm. Never heard of them before but this has me creeped out!

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

We like on the edge of a 400 acre heavily wooded estate. I have been hearing this sound and never knew what it was - my husband tried to tell me it was peacocks, some neighbors suggested fox mating calls. But now that I found this thread and did some research on the fisher cat (aka marten) it all makes sense. Here's a link to an audio file

Here is a link that might be useful: fisher cat audio

 o
Finish It Off...

Try trapping it in a Hav-a-Hart Trap if you don't want to shoot it. I remember the guy that killed a bear by stabbing it with one of his hunting arrows; then the guy got charged and fined for killing an animal out of season. The bear was chewing on the guy for Christ's Sake !!!
I'd just make a "Trip & Fall" type trap and catch then release him after you're satisfied as to what it is.
Good Luck !

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

I read that a fisher cat sounds more like a screaming child.

A cougar can sound like a screaming woman. Think of a house cat but bigger and higher pitched on the sounds. I think some of the descriptions here might fit this. I am originally from Tennessee, and know very well they are there. And have heard from countless people that have seen them, even in areas they are not supposed to be, according to the government agencies.

I saw this when searching google quickly.
screeching tires may match a ranting chimpanzee
Anything is possible, as people have animals they shouldn't, and things do get out. Also certain groups, who I shall leave nameless... release animals in areas that would be worse than keeping them in cages... thousands of minks is an example...

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Missy,
I had a similar experience in 2007, except it was where I live now in Virginia, not in New Hampshire. I was camping in a very remote forest area along the Chicohominy River, South West of Richmond . Sitting by the fire one evening, my friend and I heard this horrendous screech, a sound just like you described. Like a combination of tires screeching, a person screaming in agony, hissing. We both about came out of our skin. It was the loudest and most horrific animal sound I ever heard. It was distinct, unlike any sound I ever heard.

What I was hearing was NOT a Fischer Cat, I have seen and heard them in New Hampshire before.

While this was happening, I got on my mobile phone to a friend who is a Navy Seal and spends alot of time hunting and tracking in his off time. He heard the sound through the phone, but then he immediately asked me a question. He said " Is the sound stationary ? Can you hear it moving on the ground ? Or is it moving silently over quite a distance when you hear it again ?" Well, it was moving over a large distance and it was moving silently. I would hear it near by me, like just in the woods a few feet, and then 10-20 yards away, and then quite far away. Then it would come back again. Getting louder as it came closer.

He started to laugh and told me it was a "Screech Owl". Compared to a wood or barn owl, it is relatively quite small and it hunts at night in the air. It uses this terrible sound to startle and shock its prey (coons and rabbits) which stop and freeze, paralyzed at the sound. Then the owl swoops for the kill, lands and eats the prey on the ground.

Key words here "It eats it on the ground"

The reason for the sounds moving back and forth near and far through the woods was because the owl was " flying " as it searched prey. Gliding silently. Thats why I couldnt hear it moving.

In your case, I believe it was also a Screech Owl. Just the way you described the sound as screeching tires, screaming, hissing mixed together. I bet it had just caught its prey and was on the ground eating it. The false charge you describe was probably the owl rustling through the brush on the ground, then screeching at you to defend its prize meal, probably threatened when you drove up or came outside the house.

If you ever hear the sound from this bird, you will never forget it. Never....Ever.....

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

screaming? or schreeching? check out this link .It has an audio file. I too have heard the beast. My guess is a female cougar schreeching for a mate.http://www.gershphotopost.com/spooklight.html

RE: OK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????

Hey Missa,

Solve the puzzle yet? Put a game cam up that takes infrared pix. Bobcats make blood-curdling noises at night, but it actually sounds like a deer blowing at you, especially if it's a couple feet off the ground as you say in your post. I've had it happen a hundred times. And they will mock charge too. What color were the eyes you saw? Makes a difference in ID. Throw some corn out and put up a game cam. Game cams are great for letting you know exactly what/who may be out there when you're not around or when you're sleeping. And carry a 45 in case it's something hungry.
