What blistered my husband's hand?

My husband was chopping down Canada thistles in our meadow, and at first he thought he'd encountered a stinging nettle, but I've never known a nettle to do this kind of damage (see photo). It could have been a toxic plant, or it could have been some sort of critter -- we really have no idea. He's got blisters all over the back of his hand (one big patch and lots of little ones), and his whole hand is puffy. He says it's painful, *not* itchy. Presumably it'll heal in time, but we'd like to know what did this, in hopes of avoiding it in the future.
