freaky scales on my basil stems plant, white fly?

so ive got these white scales scabs on the stems of my basil. they can be removed with my nail. its got yellow puss insid. since we're eating the basil its freaking me out. is this white fly? or the eggs of another bug or something. ive not found any photos of this type of growth.

please, help.

Rather looks like mealybugs. Unable to see enough detail to be certain.

Can you flick them off into soapy water? If so, I urge you to do so soon.
And, if they're mealybugs, a bit of rubbing alcohol will also do them in.

these are definitely not mealybugs. its a hard exterior not moving like insect or something, but it could be eggs?

Okay, that extra bit of description does help.

Scale is tough to manage on just about any plant. And the damage looks considerable.

You could try scraping them off. But probably a losing battle.

I suggest you consider tossing the plant and starting over with a fresh, healthy specimen.

I agree that those are scale insects of some kind. Unusual to find scale on basil but not unheard of......including here in the GardenWeb.
