I have seen nothing in the last 70 years to indicate that a snake would line its nest with grass clippings although moles and voles are known to do that.

Voles are a possibility. Mole nests would never be located that near the surface. I'd absolutely poke around...and even disturb the nest.

You don't want to raise generations of field mice, voles or other rodents.

Two feet wide and two feet high? I hope you meant inches. You can investigate either way here: What dug this hole?. (Just scroll back up the page to the small holes section if you meant inches.)

there can be a big difference between what dug the hole.. and what is now using the hole.. and therein lies your mystery ...

i often wondered.. how a snake could dig a hole .. what with no arms .. etc .. and i doubt they bite and swallow and move it out the other end.. as a worm might ... yuck.. lol ...

the nest sounds like any of your common hairy vermin.. what my hamster or mouse would have done had they had green grass to work with.. rather than newspaper ...

and if you do mean 2 feet high.. keep an eye out for the fellow at the link ... might want to go hunting after dark ...

oh.. and rabbits use their own hair and grass also.. but that is a bigger rounder hole .. rather than a tunnel ... and sometimes you will find a welcome mat deep in the hole .. copy paste this as an e.g.:

Ken...you are too funny and thanks for the Bugs Bunny! I've attached a picture of the nest and the hole; however, you can't really see the hole that well. I poked around in the hole...saw no movement...yeah! And I removed the grass...I'm wanting to plant my spinach. :)

Birds or bunnies can also be found in nests like this. Perhaps the nest was still under construction. I have wrens build in my baskets each year and they do manage to somehow get a little pit into the soil before they start lining it. Maybe just were the basket was watered, but after the birds fledge, and I remove the nest, there is a concave hole in the soil.
