Beetle larvae/youngsters, but don't know which one.

One of the 30,000 Scarab Beetle larva probably. Your local office of your state universities Cooperative Extension Service most likely would be able to identify it.

bugs usually dont cause disease ...

it might be easier .. if you can tell us what beetles were hanging around.. this or last year???

did you have an onslaught of japanese beetles ??? .. if so, then there is your answer ...

why are you surprised they are in the ground ... mother earth is not a barren plain ...

BTW .. its fall ... its time to be thinking about getting rid of your maters ... not killing bugs.. your plants will get uglier.. and uglier.. until you decide.. you have seen enough ... lol .. also with declining sun.. and temps.. whats left of your crop.. will not be ripening ... at that point.. be done with them.. and turn the soil in your bed.. and hope the birds will come harvest these vile creatures ...

No Japanese beetles at all. Haven't seen any beetles at all and I'm in my garden frequently during the day and early evening.
We are still getting 8+ hours of sunlight each day and I still have fruit on the vine which is ripening. Also we are finally getting our summer weather. Last year in my zone we had warm weather thru the 1st week of October and this year we are experiencing the same type of weather so I'm leaving my healthy plants that are still producing up.
