This is my first year. I planted 3 each of squash and zucchini.

They are rotting from the base and up through many of the stems to the leaves. The stems get soft and then goopy. Three of the plants completely died. Those three actually were blown over in a storm and recovered from the damage. However, they were killed by this stuff. Of the three left, I have gotten about a dozen and a half vegetables since planting.

Early summer was very hot and humid. I am not sure if this is a bacteria, fungus, or bug (or combination).

Any thoughts? I am trying to avoid the same mess next year.
