Ewww, yes, creepy. What comes to mind is the resemblance to a crab shell and I'm thinking skeleton of a spider? ... like something took the "cab" and left the "undercarriage" behind.

Oh good grief that's one ugly carcass. I think it's the bottom half of a spider. Maybe some sort of wolf spider. The horse shoe ring looked odd, and that's why I think most of its body is missing. I noted eight cavities and two more in front for the pedipalps of its face as if the whole top of it is missing but the empty holes are above the eight legs and two pedipalps where they attached.......... and why we can't differentiate body segments. Poor thing.

I believe it to be the freshly molted exoskeleton of the spider....who has walked away from this old rag in good shape.....bigger and better than ever.

If we had an idea of the size of this, we might be able to ID.

Spiders, shell fish, insects, and many other arthropods molt their skins (exoskeleton), often in one big act...leaving behind the perfect shell. Spiders pull each leg out and back out of that dead skin ever so carefully. These molts disintegrate rapidly or else we would literally be buried up to our eyebrows in this stuff.

Cool! I never thought about a spider shedding its skin. Of course they get bigger than a tiny spiderlet. duh Thanks........that makes total sense.

What kind of Tarantulas do they have in Hammond, Louisiana? NOW we're talking creepy! If the old exoskeleton is the size of a silver dollar, the spider that came out of that old 'schmata ' is a lot bigger. :-o
