That looks like a grub, especially since you say it has feet only by its head. Cannot tell from the photo what kind. They eat organic matter - mostly plant roots - while in their larval stage. Some are plentiful enough to do considerable damage to turf or plants and don't do anything to earn their keep ... except perhaps serve as food for birds and other wildlife. Others are beneficial in their adult stage, preying upon pest insects. Perhaps someone can ID this one for you. Have you checked with your Cooperative Extension Service yet?

put your unopenned bag of soil on the driveway in full sun for a few days.. and cook your soil clean of such

Thanx for the info...set a few out for the birds to enjoy andim going to get them out of my raised bed...haven't had any contact with CES but may do that as well...

what would your COUNTY extension office know about bags of MIRACLE soil shipped from god knows what third world country ...

i would bet my nickle.. that would be a waste of time...

i would spend my time calling the 800 on the bag.. and asking miracle grows peeps.. what the heck they are shipping around the country .... and whether they have any concerns about shipping god knows what bugs country wide ...

isnt that how the med fruit fly and the EAB bugs got shipped all over the country ...

i gotta think there might be some liability involved ...

Good point, Ken, about spreading possibly troublesome insects or diseases into or around the country. Many came in on pallets made from infested wood and on packing material. However, the county office of the Cooperative Extension Service is an arm of the state university, and they are most interested in tracking such things. If they ID it as some kind of serious potential threat, they have the resources and weight of the university, and many good connections with various local, state and federal agencies to address the problem.

The department of agriculture is the agency involved/concerned with tracking invasive insects.

And yes, university folks often get involved, usually after the Ag Dept declares the critter(s) a problem.
