Mud-like spots on Sedum

Posted by novicegardener_2006 Zone 4, Iowa (My Page) on

I have an Autumn Fire Sedum (similar to Autumn Joy) which is in its third season. This year, most of the season, it has had large "mud spatters" on all the leaves. The flowers tried to come out, but didn't really develop. Now in September, the leaves are also turning yellow and brown. What disease could this be and what should I do?

Thank you for all help.

Hey, can you post a photo of your problem, sounds like maybe its too much water. I could give you a better answer with a photo.

RE: Mud-like spots on Sedum

I had the same on a few of my sedums, in one specific bed, and all were affected. At first I thought it was just dirt splashed on the leaves, like after a heavy downpour. All my other sedums scattered around the house were fine. My bed was actually the dryest, most neglected bed in my garden, and definitely not overwatered. We did have an unusually wet spring but that all pretty much ended by the beginning of the summer. I only noticed the "damage" in late summer, probably around the time the original post showed up. They may have been crowded out by the ditch lilies that surround them. Those are the only two types of plants in that specific strip aligning the shed. The only thing I could think of was maybe a pesticide. While I am anti-pesticide, DH doesn't hesitate to break out the big guns, especially when he notices termite tunnels on his beloved shed. This is the first time I'd ever seen this on a sedum and can't think of a logical explanation, since it's been a very dry bed for years and DH has used chemicals to control termite damage in that bed before.
