woodpeckers on my house

I have a masonite chimney that several woodpeckers have made nesting holes in.

I understand that the chimney is hollow and it seems like a nice nesting place for them.

I have woods near my house. I know that 'deterrent' methods are ineffective.

So now I need to replace the masonite and physically prevent their return.

Does anybody have experience with cement fiber siding?

I have been replacing single boards with this (hardiplank). I am wondering if this will be sufficient to stop the nesting activity???

I am afraid that they will still try to peck the boards. Maybe it will keep them from making the full size hole, but they will still make those exploratory holes?

If so, what should I do?

I would like to think I could staple plastic bird netting all over the chimney, but I wonder if they will still be able to land on that and peck through. Using metal hardware cloth seems like the next option, but that will be harder to work with and a lot more expensive. Unfortunately, I have a 2 story chimney :(

Unfortunately, they have tried to peck holes in other parts of the house, masonite and trim boards, but I do not see how I can prevent those attacks.
