The damage is not typical of earwigs as it is so uniformly presented as knotched edges. That's the damage usually seen by weevils.

But since there seems to be so much feeding going on between yours and the neighbor's I think that some old fashioned observing would be useful. Weevils, if that's what they are, are small insects (a type of beetle) and will fly when disturbed.

viviancheshire, incredibly, the damage reminds me of the activity of the Atta spp. of ants.
I will need some time to find out how they managed to travel from the tropics to your part of the world and how they survive the climate there.

Check out the vine weevil....quite common to the UK. It can be found on a very wide variety of garden plants and that's exactly what the damage looks like.

rhizo_1ø....95 % of me says you are right on with weevil damage....but there are a few "bites" that look alot like leaf cutter bees....what do you think?

Need to see the damage on other plants to make certain it is from the same culprit.

Around here the black vine weevil & 14 other kinds of weevils are common. When it comes to damage by vine weevils which Iknow, that in the OP image *isn't* typical. Image shows "bites" that are far too humongous.

I'm assuming that the picture is of a small leaf. Maybe not!

Doesn't look like the work of leaf cutter bees to me....they are quite uniformly cookie cutterish. But there are many species. The leaf pieces cut by bees will much larger than that of a weevil.

I live on the north coast of france outside boulogne.
The property has been built in the last five years.
This eating is so prolific and the weevil seems the most likely. How big is this insect a I have seen nothing around to cause such damage. There must be thousands around or they are very hungry

The size depends upon the species, but they are usually quite small. Out of curiosity, take your hand or a ruler and run it through the branches, disturbing the leaves and stems. Weevils, which tend to hide, will fly out to escape.
