I have sticky white foam globules on my lavender plants. What are they and what should I do about them?

Perhaps spittle bugs? But at least around here, they're a springtime thing

If so, hose off and repeat as needed.

Can you post a picture? That would help use be more certain of what you have.

I can't get you a picture but I looked up spittle bug and this could be it. The foam is definitely white and the little critter under it sounds like some other descriptions. You mentioned you have them in spring and these appeared late summer and have gotten worse. I did spray with water when they first appeared but they have definitely spread. Is there another treatement?

Well, because you're in CA, and because it's the wrong season, it's possible you have a pest I don't know about. Or that I'm not interpreting your description correctly.

If I were you, I'd phone several large independent garden centers -- if there are any left -- and ask them.

Or take a sample -- enclosed in a clear plastic container -- for someone to look at.

Oh yes, then please come back and tell us what you learned.

There are many species of spittlebug. And one or some of them are VERY common on lavender. Perhaps this is a species who works on a different calendar schedule?

Not when I lived in SoCal. (I left November 1997.)

CA is one of the hot spots for new critters. Would pay to have it checked.

I have spittle bugs right now on my rosemary here in SoCal. Not at all unusual for this time of the year. That's not saying it couldn't be anything else (but I bet it is spittle bug).
