Something digging up my mint??

I have a container on my porch with spearmint and lemon balm. It's been there for months, but only recently I've found huge holes dug into the soil with the bottom roots pulled up and exposed like something is eating them. There are lots of squirrels in my yard...would they really eat the roots of mint plants?

More likely they are burying an acorn in the pot. I don't think squirrels would be after spearmint or lemon balm when it is time for major fall food storage.

I agree....squirrels. They are either burying something OR digging around in there to see IF they buried something earlier. I've watched them do that. They might not have the best memories, sometimes.
