sticky sap on peace lillly

I clean for a lady that has a beautiful peace lilly, looks very healthy except for the sticky sap that is all over the plant. I cant keep the plant clean it is so sticky. Today I took it home with me to see if I can help it out. I found it to have some kind of bug on the back side of the leaves. they are just on the back and the stem. A hard shell, very tiny black thing. I thought it might be scale but from what I found so far that is not it. Anybody got an Idea? Thanks Debbie

Scale lifts off easily with the edge of a fingernail.
Scale is common on peace lily.

Debbie, it sure sounds exactly like a scale insect to me. What makes you think that it isn't? Do the fingernail test and let us know.

After looking at more pictures and doing the fingernail test I am sure it is scale. I thought at first it was but after looking on-line at different pic. I started to doubt myself. I have pretty much cleaned them off. One more bath should do it. Thanks~ Debbie

Do an inspection every couple of weeks, as more will crop up as eggs hatch and tiny crawlers get large.
