What is this big, scary bug?

It was on our doorstep. It seems a lot larger than the picture, about the size of a large Florida cockroach but much more steampunk-designed and hefty looking.

Common name is Jerusalem Cricket or Nino de la tierra or potato bug.

Most common in sandy soil. Seldom seen by gardeners. But they can bite when handled.
