The tribulations of the latitudinally challenged are tough!

The populations of the white stuff tend to ebb and flow until crashing completely. The jury is still out as to whether it is a beneficial or a pest. Some other pests are dissuaded by it and, though cold to the touch, it actually does have insulating qualities but come March one does tire of insulation...and isolation.

I hear that a massive infestation has been happening in Buffalo New York. I wonder if the area should be quarantined. What if it spreads eastward?

Maybe I am latitudinaly challenged (born 5 degrees north of the equator).
I think that this is the third cultural synapse in my (American) experience.
The first was a billboard pictured in the Reader's Digest.
It proclaimed "Everybody except Mrs Paul welcome to our new aquarium."
I was enlightened by a Polish immigrant.
The second was a cartoon depicting an elf pointing to a map of the USA and explaining to Santa Claus, "Yes, Santa Claus, there is a Virginia!"
An American who befriended me, the newly minted immigrant, explained that one to me; and I was quite charmed by the heart warming (full) story.
