They appear to be aphids. They don't "devour" plants as in eat them. Instead, they suck out the plant sap.

Could be Aphids and if so there was no reason to trash the plant since a sharp stream of water would knock the wee buggers off the plant.

Kimmsr, the plant was an annual, Amaranthus caudatus (love lies bleeding). The trash can is a totally appropriate location for an annual plant in PA in November.

Not 'could be aphids '.....CLEARLY aphids, unless you know of another insect with cornicles.

Okay that's what I thought. I've only seen light-green aphids before, so these were new to me. I've never seen so MANY though. I could barely see the poor plant through the bugs.

But yeah, it's November, and she was about done anyway. Thankfully, she left me with about 10,000 seeds :)

and if the bugs return next year.. you declare her a magnet.. and find a plant that doesnt attract them ..

dont get caught up in the pretty name game.. and struggle to make a crumby plant a good plant thru insecticides ...

sometimes its just not worth it ...

Those ugly creatures are stink bugs. They ome in black. Grey ,they are called armor bug ,their nymph are orange and black. Best way to kill them is with soap water,spray and catch it in a bucket with soapy water to draw. They will detroy our plants. .not a friendly to the garden.
