Pervasive, non-fatal 'spores' on many types of plants

This is not, strictly speaking, a question about the garden, but about house plants.

I've had these things on my plants for a few years already. Although they seem to weaken plants, they don't kill them. To me, they look like fern spores (brown raised bumps, about 3mm long and 1-2 mm wide, oval-shaped), but I suspect that they may be fungal? I am completely unsure. They have been on my Boston fern, spider plants, orchid cactus, jade, and a palm. I have pictures of the organisms on my orchid cactus, but for some reason can't link to them (I'll do so if someone lets me know how)... Any idea what they might be, or how to cure them (or if it's even really necessary to do so)? Thanks in advance...
