black/brown/red dots on plant - scales?

Hi,

I bought this plant a month or so ago and there are lots of small blackish/brownish/redish line-shaped things on the plant (see attached photo). If i scrape them, some of them flake off the plant. What are they? Are they scales? How can I get rid of them?

Your picture didn't come through but it sure sounds like scale.

On house plants I just wash them off with soapy water.
