Settled in for the winter

We're still in fall here in Texas, but the plants have been in since around Thanksgiving. We've only hit freezing a few times and for the first few freezes I bring them in and take them back out again within 48 hours, placing them near the back door for ease:
Since most are so small (nearly half are one-year-old seedlings), they are arrayed around the house when it's time to come in for good. Don't know how many more winters I can do this with 60 plumerias:
And I use whatever containers and surfaces I can find to keep them from seeping water into the floor! Commercial size baking sheets are especially good for seedlings that need regular watering.
Before the weather got reliably cold I ordered my first adeniums. Here are Sweet Noble's blooms:
Here is My Valentine (rooted approx. a year and a half ago), who is clearly not aware of the concept of foliage drop:
I think she dropped two leaves in early fall and that was it, same as last year. Now if only she'd bloom for me...
Spider mites seem to be absent--knock wood!--this season so far. I sprayed with insecticidal soap for two days before bringing the plumies in this winter. I also spied some tiny ants working the tips of several plants, so maybe they're helping, too.
Hope everyone is having a good winter!

Hi Jen, They look great. Mine have really started to drop leaves now. |

| Hey Jen, Your trees look like they do in the summer!!! Beautiful foliage on all of them! You are so lucky to have the extended growing season. My trees that are in the backroom are quiet and bare, but the ones in the greatroom and under lights are still holding onto their leaves. My Penang Peach inflo is slowly starting to grow more daily, so maybe in a few weeks i will have some blooms here! We will see... : ) Your DR's look like they are doing well. Thanks for all of the wonderful pictures. Makes me excited to see the Plumies look so alive and green. Hope you all have a great day!!! Laura |

| Yeah I dont know how you do it. Mine are in partial hibernation. Even the three that do keep out unless the temps are below 40 don't have leaves like that. |

| Jen, I just brought mine outside this morning, I will leave them out all week. It will be in the 60's and 70's all week. I gave each plant a cup of water, I hope I did not make a mistake. I just felt they would be happier outside in the fresh air. Barbra |

| I should have clarified: those photos were taken late last year and I meant to post before I left for the holidays. I got some heavy leaf drop in late December but only about a dozen are dormant (fewer than three leaves), another couple dozen are down to about half their leaves. There are a few that just aren't resting at all, with most of the seedlings going strong. Those under lights have actually put on up to an inch of growth in the last couple of months! Some of these seedlings are growing into monsters. Again, all these are scattered around in different lighting conditions but are doing what they're programmed to do rather than what the conditions dictate. Laura, that's great that Penang Peach is pushing an inflo! Is that one of your new plants? Mine is what I'd call semi-dormant, but it was just rooted last spring. The DRs are now defoliated, with one last bloom falling off. I planted the seeds you gave me a couple of weeks ago but still no signs of life--sure hope they germinate! Barbara, I think you're right that they're just happier out in the sun as long as it stays at least in the 60's. If they have leaves a little water shouldn't hurt. A fresh coastal breeze should be nice for them, too. I was reading Jim Little's book again about the ideal conditions to grow them, hot and humid but with some soft cloud cover. These are apparently what will bring out the most intense colors on their blooms. The Texas coast should be ideal. |

| Jen, I removed all the leaves when I put them inside the garage. I hope the water doesn't hurt them. They all look like they are getting new claws on the top. It was kinda of an after thought adding the water. Now I wish I wouldn't have done it. I was afraid the sun all week would have cooked them. When we left yesterday at 8am it was already sunny.
