Desiccating branches

I have a huge Atztec Gold cutting that is basically a small tree from a friend that I planted in the fall sometime and the outer small branch tips are starting to dry up. The very tips are still green and have proto leaves, but the areas below it are starting to shrivel and get soft. can it be saved? The bottom trunk/limb part is still fine however. Unfortunately I planted it in a black pot(that was the biggest I had), so I cant see if it rooted, I dug in a bit but couldn't find roots, I was afraid to dig deeper in case I damaged any roots that might be there. Should I spray the branches. I have a couple times already, but it doesn't seemed to have made any difference. Should I do it more often? I lost an Inca Gold cutting to desiccation and I don't want that to happen again.
