One more pic of Penang Peach blossoms under grow lights

As most of you know.... Penang Peach has an interesting fragrance. Most say they smell like fresh peaches. My blossoms smell like a combination of peaches and suntan lotion.

Nice! This is one cultivar that seems to look different based on heat/light/etc. but always different in a "good way" if you know what I mean. Some varieties just look washed out w/o a ton of heat but this is great, a very rich yellow with the orange trim...

Thanks irun5K. So you're a runner, huh? I just wish the blossoms were larger! Laura, I can't think of anyone more addicted to plants than you! I thought I was the most addicted person there was. My wife thinks so. kms2, if you live in zone 9, you are one lucky person! All you people that live in zone 5 or higher, I'm jealous!

Awesome pic Kevin! Penang PEach became my favorite last year...so much so that I actually bought another Penang Peach and I have a cutting that I am rooting from the 1st PP.

I also agree that the more intense light and heat, the better the color, and the fragrance... a little diffrent. I had bought my 600 watt HPS light last year, and by accident, I forgot to turn on my fan to cool the ballast. Needless to say, I fried that ballast. My 1st Penang PEach was blooming and even though I had my PP in front of the window, within 2 days, the flower buds that were opening, were opening more yellow than anything else. The fragrance also became more subtle. I may not be so crazy about these blooms over the summer.

I believe Dave from NoVA posted pics of his PP when it bloomed outdoors over the summer, and his flowers were yellow.

Now you know when you have a problem when you say that your going to grow your PP under lights, DURING THE SUMMER, just so you can have the awesome colored flowers!

I could not agree more on the intensity and fragrance. Here is a picture of the same Penang Peach in early December:

Compared early Summer:

And Late Summer:
Penang Peach 2

Depending on the map or I guess the historical data used to make the map I am in Zone 8b or 9a. Although due to my location very near a major freeway corridor and on a south facing gentle slope hillside I would lean towards the higher zone.

I actually put on a jacket to run this morning. It was 41 degrees. but Thursday night is expected to be 30.

Hello Everyone,

Getting so excited seeing the beautiful Penang Peach!!!

I love the coloration in every climate. This particular variety has so much to offer it is a must have in my book. My Penang Peach still has an inflo from this fall and is continuing to slowly grow under lights. It will be interesting to see what color it will have.

K...those pictures are gorgeous!! I especially love the last "summer" picture of Penang Peach with the rain drops on it. It really is worth printing a picture of that one and setting it where everyone can see. Quite Amazing!!!

Hi Dave,

Love your Penang Peach!!! Knowing how close we are to each other gives me an idea what to expect from mine and i cant wait to see her bloom in the summer. I just wish it didnt push an inflo at the end of the season. What can you do? My Lavender is trying right now to form one, but i think it will stay semi dormant and hopefully continue to develope this spring. The only problem is this one needs to be root pruned badly and im so afraid of losing the inflo. This tree didnt grow much for me last summer like the others and i should have root pruned it sooner.

Hope all is well in NoVA!!!

Take care everyone!!

Laura

Nice pics everyone! Does anyone have a pic of their entire Penang Peach plant? The couple I've seen appear to maintain a bush form.

I am interested if selective pruning could turn something with this growth pattern into more of a standard, or mini-tree form where the trunk is visible and the foilage is all at the top.

Hi Laura - the raindrops were so rare this last summer I might have been taking a picture of them and not the penang peach inflo.

here are some pictures I have with me. This is a plant from a cutting i bought in July 2008 (which was my first foray into named varieties; therefore I call it "Patient Zero").

The branch structure is hard to see. I beleive you could shape the plant. Every tip produced an inflo and branched (25% double and 75% triple). It seems to be low growing and I do tie/brace branches (hence the green metal broomstick backbone) but this is a juvenile. I will be pruning it for the first time ever in about a month.

Here is a pic from late Sept 2011 I had on my phone. I think it had gotten too dry on me (note the dropped leaves).

These are cell phone pics from June 2011. Again not the best for seeing branch structure.

I can grab it and pull it out of the greenhouse and take a pic for you this weekend. Its probably at 10-15% of the leaves from these pictures and you can see the branches.

Great plant- thanks for sharing that. An inflo on every tip and most of them branching 3 ways?!? I can see why this cultivar (and her seedlings) are so popular!

Brian, I think you could probably shape this one into any form you like. Typically, to create a standard, you'd want to start with as long an unbranched cutting as you can find. If it does end up branching low down, you could prune back to only one branch and train it slowly over time to a more upright position.

I don't think I have any photos of my entire plant. Here's a vid of it earlier in the season. Can't really see the trunk though. Because of its propensity to branch, it does tend to grow wide rather than tall.

Wow, everyone's pics are beautiful. And the blossoms are so big. I can't wait to hopefully have something bloom outside during the summer months in our cool climate in northern Utah. It hasn't happened yet!
