If you cover it with foil (or anything else) to prevent sunburn when do you remove it? If its always covered how do they acclimate to the sun?

Conceptually the foil or TP tube is nothing more than a crutch to cover the sunburn until it has leaves and makes its own shade.

I wanted to say that i also like to keep them out of direct sun until they have some leaves to protect the stems. Believe me, i have learned the hard way about sunburn stems.. i like to keep them in some sun when i first put them out for the season, but i let them acclimate more and allow full sun when the leaves can protect them.

We all learn.. i had a meltdown one summer due to temps in the greenhouse.. Umhmmm.. thanks to DH.. Ummhumm. They looked like a nuclear meltdown on some of the tips..

I do use the papertowel holders and or toilet paper holders like Bill uses. I haven't tried the foil... it sounds like it would hold up well with the elements too!

Think of any tree or plant that we put outside.. they need to adjust to the sun, so let them adjust slowly when they have been inside for the winter. Think of it as going to the beach without a hat for the first day of summer!!! ;-)

Where we live...as the axis of the sun changes...the sunburn changes . Fall and Spring seem to be the worst as the sun is not overhead but at an angle. I am constantly looking and moving the protective material...what ever it may be...roxanne
