Need advice on spacing plants

Posted by honeybunny2 Z9TX (My Page) on

I just read that plumeria like there heads in the sun, but their roots in the shade? Does this mean that I need to plant them closer together. I currently plan to space them 5 ft apart. I looked at some of the pictures on the fourm and they look more like 3 ft apart. What would the ideal spacing between plants be? Do they mean I need to get ground covers, or mulch. Barbra

Barbara,

Go do a search on Bills yard. He has a great layout including pots and trees planted in the ground. If you cant find them, i will try and find that pic for you..He just posted it a month ago.

Hope this helps..

Hi Bill!!

I am promoting your beautiful yard!! LOL... : )

The best I can figure from Bill's pictures is 5 bricks apart, would this be around 24 inches between plants?? If this is correct, I will need alot more plants. I ordered 8 grafted plants from Florida Colors with my Christmas Money.
Bill, can you advise what the distance is between your trees, by the way your yard is just beautiful. I missed seeing the picture, I am at the coast every other week, without a computer. I am going back this evening for another week. If the distance is less than 5 ft, I will need to move all the bricks I have placed in my flowerbeds, getting ready for the spring. Thanks, Barbra

Hey Honeybunny...
For a single I'd look at 24-36" apart, cuz the leaves run about 12" ea in full sun. Good air circulation helps keep rust and scale down round heya. So that might be a consideration.

Barbra, I'd imagine that your ideal spacing will depend on the varieties you're planting. A wide grower like Singapore or Suzanne St. Amour will need more space than a tall-growing standard like Aztec Gold.

I find when they've leafed out in summer that I've underestimated the space they need, so I'd probably go at least three feet.

You could just plunge them for this year and next to see if you like the spacing. Then adjust as needed. If you are planting in the ground at Port A I would go 5 feet apart.

It depends on what you want. My hedges are about 3 feet apart but i have each plant staked and I pull up the branches to keep them from growing outward. My psycho extends about 10 feet from the stem as it was left to grow naturally. I think 5 feet gives a plant plenty of room to expand but I had several hundred plants and was forced to find the closest solution. It is much more work to tie up and prune to keep plants in a smaller radius and at about seven feet tall they would like more room to spread. Air circulation does become a problem as the plants grow larger.

RE: Need advice on spacing plants

Well, I'm back home. I went to the coast Friday evening. Saturday morning I went to get my pass for the dump, and could not find my wallet. Would you believe I took my purse and left my wallet at home. Since its going to rain at the coast all week, I decided to drive back home today. I can't do anything in the yard, when its raining, and we get terrible TV reception when it rains. At least here I have a computer, and will be able to go to the store.

Thanks everyone for responding to my question regarding spacing of plants. I think I will go with spacing 4 ft apart, this give me room to plant 3 more plumeria. My plumeria are all very small, so I do not think I will go the 5ft until they get much larger. Now I just need to decide what 3 plumeria I want for my birthday. Barbra
