Should I reinforce this point on my plumeria

I was inspired by the post which received advise about shaping a plumeria. I have been worried about this plumeria. I staked the long branch so it would grow upright last fall but am worried the junction will be weak. Should I do something to protect it when I plant it in the ground later or just depend on keeping it staked?

If you wonder about why my plants were potted in white buckets, we were building a house and had to move into a rent house. My plumerias were in the ground at the house we sold and I had to put them in anything I could find for the time they were in the rent house. I even used kittie litter tubs. They got sunburned some last summer but survived so at least I kept most of my collection.

I basically stake up to about 12 feet. I now use conduit from home depot painted green after the plant outgrows the 6' HHD poles. I feel staking allows you to grow hedges that are close together by directing the growth up instead of wide. Here is a shot ot plants in a hedge with wood stakes in 2008 and again with leaves in 2011,

I am really glad I saw the post on trimming. I am unhappy with the shape of my plumerias and am determined to take a more proactive approach. Bill, I appreciate your taking the time to reply. Your suggestions will be very helpful and your plants look beautiful. I can't wait for warm weather to get started.
