What to do about mis-shapened plant

Hello.

I wish there was a pic to offer but there isn't so I will try my best to explain what the plant looks like.

The main stem is approx 2 ft. Last summer when I first got it, it had two branches growing almost straight up from the stem. Kind of like a very tight Y. One of the branches shriveled and died so I am left with one branch growing off the main stem. It is very odd looking with only the one branch growing straight up like that off the side of the main stem.

I would like to cut off the branch which is almost 2 1/2 ft. Right now it is almost finished blooming. Would now or after the blooming, be a good time to cut it back? Will the main stem grow more branches? If I don't cut it now could I look forward to more blooms again this summer?

TIA
