Sounds like a good plan. other option would be to cut out a chunk of the middle and graft the tops back on to the root stock.

Thank you for your input. Cutting them in the middle and grafting them is a fun idea, but that would require me to learn a new trick. :) I guess this is a good opportunity to learn though. I think I'll give it a try on a couple of them!

I've had good success at rooting. For the rest of them I think I'll cut the top 2 1/2' off and re-root them as cuttings.

Maybe more branches will then grow off of what is left on the bottom and make more cuttings! The fun never ends.

Does anyone know why seedlings grow so lanky? I have several that are 4+ feet tall

Brighty-you could also just do an aggressive root prune instead of going to a bigger pot, unless the height is really your main concern. Mine love a good root prune!

Shirley-hard to say why they are lanky for sure but a few thoughts that came to mind are: seedlings are programmed to GROW GROW GROW! The parent plants could be lanky. Many folks don't give their seedlings as much sun as they give their other plants...and a bunch of other unknowns but those are some of my best guesses :)
