Plant in ground now or wait for spring?

Hard to believe winter is coming since it is going to be 105 here in Riverside today but it is October, after all. I recently acquired several large plumeria (thanks George!) and wonder if I can put them in the ground now or should I wait until spring. We usually get several days of frost in the coldest areas of the yard spread out over isolated days in January and February. Luckily our soil is fast draining red sand so drainage is not a problem. Can the roots respond to being planted in the ground this late in the growing cycle?
