Update on 24 hour indoor lighting

I just read an article in the Socalplumeria Society website written by Scott Lawden titled "Growing Plumeria in Cold Weather". At the end of the article he lists a bunch of things he would have done earlier had he known about it, and one of them was to give his indoor plumeria lighting for 24 hours per day. He said there was no ill effects from not giving them a dark period, and that the plumeria grew better under 24 hour lighting. He was also warned by professional growers not to do this, but he found out that plumeria love the 24 hour lighting and grow and bloom better by giving them continous lighting. Anyone else experienced this? I'm going to try it and see!

I've read the same thing. I don't think it's harmful at all to them and will certainly encourage growth and blooms -- if that's what you want this time of year.

One of his points..

I think one of his points (correct me if I'm wrong) was that if plumerias are actively growing (albeit slowly) over winter, they are much less prone to be stressed and get blacktip. They're quicker to get going in the Spring and quicker to form inflos. This is important for us Northern growers.

I would not discount the efforts of those people who have actually tried it and had success (Kimisdad, Scott Lawden).

must-read for northern growers

Everyone who is growing these plants up North should look thru this guy's PP presentation. They may discover some new information. Everyone has their own 'storage' situations, but they can be improved with some knowledge about what is ideal.

It's a PowerPoint presentation, so most of the content is in bulleted form. You'll have to sort of read between the lines!
