A new owner of a plumeria

I live in Lakeland FL and one of my daylily club members , gave me a potted up plumeria. At the time she gave it to me it was just a bare stick. I asked how to take care of it and she said , just stick it under a tree and forget it. Well I didn't put it under a tree but sat it on the ground near my ac unit and with all the heat we had it put on leaves and started a bloom stalk and branching. Then we had two days of temperatures of low 40's at night and barely in the 70's during the day. I used 4 bamboo stakes arranged teepee style and used blankets to cover it. I used cable ties or zip ties as some call them to secure the blankets to the bamboo. I saw this afternoon that a bud is getting ready to open. The coloring is red on the outside.

pray for warm weather and keep it warm at night so the flowers will open. If you need, bring it inside at night.

I am unable to bring it inside since it grew through the pot into the ground. I am waiting to see if it will go dormant so I can dig up and re-pot into a bigger pot.

When it goes dormant, you can also dig it up, shake all the dirt from around the roots, place the roots in a paper (not plastic) bag and store it bare root. In the spring, replant it into new soil and it will take off again. Bill

How do I tell when it goes dormant? I have never had a plumeria before so I do not know anything about them.

There will be no more leaves on your tree...Happens every winter.

I had a bloom open yesterday and today it fell off. It is a pink with white and a pale yellow center.

Hi Smittee,
Where at In Auburndale? I shop at the Walmart there in Auburndale about twice a month. Probably will be there this coming Sat to get a few groceries.
I took a picture of one of the blooms with my cell phone I could show you if we were to meet there.
